Located in one of British Columbia’s fastest-growing areas, North Peace Regional Airport (YXJ) provides essential services to the Peace River Region, including the District of Taylor and the City of Fort St. John.
In 2019, YXJ welcomed a record-breaking 278,720 passengers, flying on two major commercial airlines: Air Canada and WestJet.
YXJ offers scheduled passenger service to Calgary and Vancouver, providing connections to over 100 destinations through these major airline hubs.
The airport’s history began in 1938, when the local Board of Trade successfully lobbied for a landing strip along the strategic air route between Edmonton and White Horse.
During World War II, the region’s strategic importance increased as a key northwest staging route to Alaska, leading to the construction of a new airfield by the U.S. Air Force in 1943, which remains the current airport site.
After WWII, the Canadian government purchased the airfield, and in April 1951, YXJ officially became a port of entry under Canada’s Department of Transport.
In 1997, the North Peace Airport Society entered into a long-term lease agreement with Vantage Airport Group, which continues to operate the airport to this day.
A major renovation and expansion completed in 2005 resulted in a larger terminal, upgraded aprons, taxiways, and safety improvements, including a new airport lighting system.
The terminal building incorporates energy-efficient features such as winter sun canopies, summer shading, and an innovative roof design to minimize snow accumulation during the winter months.
