Accessible Ground Transportation
Accessible ground transportation is available at North Peace Regional Airport and in the city of Fort St. John. Taxis, and shuttles, including HandyDART, should be pre-arranged with the service provider ahead of time to ensure an accessible vehicle is ready to take you to or from the airport. Ground Transportation Operators open doors for all clients, assist loading and unloading luggage and assist persons with disabilities to the front of the line at their check-in desk inside the terminal.
For more information on ground transportation options, including reserving accessible vehicles from car rental companies serving North Peace Regional Airport, please visit our To & From page.
Curbside
A designated curbside area is located in front of the airport terminal building for dropping off and picking up; however, no vehicle can be left unattended in these areas. This space is signed and painted.
Parking
Our terminal parking facilities are fully accessible, with designated parking spots located close to the Airport Terminal Building. To use one of these spots, please ensure your valid Accessible Parking Permit is displayed and clearly visible on the vehicle’s sun visor or front dash. Enjoy up to 30 minutes of complimentary parking in the main lot on us. (This excludes metered parking.)
Arrivals / Departures
Our terminal features automatic doors into our departures and arrivals area.
Airline Assistance
If you are flying in or out of North Peace Regional Airport, it is important to contact your airline prior to travelling to let them know that you require special assistance. Airline representatives will be able to provide information on the use of wheelchairs, passenger escort services, and support with check-in and boarding processes, as well as arrival at your destination.
While North Peace Regional Airport does its best to accommodate all passengers, failure to pre-arrange assistance may result in a delay in service. We strongly suggest that you contact your airline at least 48 hours prior to travel to allow time for your requests to be fulfilled. We also recommend that travelers review their airline’s check-in, cut-off and boarding time requirements prior to arriving at the airport. Contact information for airlines serving North Peace Regional Airport is available on our Airline & Charter Service page.
Wheelchairs
North Peace Regional Airport is fully wheelchair accessible. Airlines operating out of the airport have wheelchairs available for passengers.
Washrooms
Public washroom facilities are located in both pre and post-security areas for guests, including wheelchair accessible stalls and infant changing tables.
Designated Relieving Areas for Service Animals
A designated relief area for service animals and pets is located directly outside the Departures doors of the terminal building.
A second designated service dog relief area is located after the screening checkpoint within the secure area/departures lounge. You will find the service dog relief area at the back left corner the departures lounge. The area is signed and equipped with hand sanitizer, waste disposal bags and a covered waste collection bin.
Additional Information and Resources
The Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) is a valuable resource for learning about air travel accessibility regulations and discovering helpful guides for accessible travel. The CTA works to ensure that federally regulated (air, rail, marine and interprovincial bus) transportation services and facilities in Canada are accessible to persons with disabilities.
The Government of Canada’s Access to Travel website provides information on transportation between Canadian cities by air, rail, ferry and intercity bus, local transportation, the accessibility of airport terminals, provincial tourism and service standards. The website also features Tips for Travellers with Disabilities, an online tool that provides trip-planning information and resources.
For more information and guidance about accessible travel and the CTA’s dispute resolution services, please contact info@otc-cta.gc.ca.

Sunflower Lanyard Program
The Sunflower Lanyard Program aims to improve assistance for travelers with differing needs and abilities.
North Peace Regional Airport is proud to offer the globally recognized Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program to support passengers with hidden disabilities, also known as invisible disabilities. The Sunflower logo aims to assist those travelling with invisible disabilities who may need a little extra patience, care and assistance during their travel experience.
HOW DOES THE PROGRAM WORK?
If you or someone you are travelling with has an invisible disability, such as autism, chronic pain, epilepsy, low vision, hearing loss, dementia, anxiety disorders, brain injuries, and many more, you may choose to wear the Sunflower lanyard as a discreet way to indicate to our airport staff that you may need a little more help or time when going through the airport processes. Wearing the Sunflower lanyard is voluntary. The Sunflower lanyard provides a helpful identifier to airport staff to best assist and supports anyone with an invisible disability.
Passengers wear a Sunflower Lanyard to signal to airport employees that they may need extra help or additional time while navigating through the airport. The lanyard acts as a visible marker from a distance but still offers privacy for the person wearing it.
Passengers do not need to disclose their invisible disability to staff. They are encouraged to inform us of how best to assist them.
HOW TO GET A SUNFLOWER LANYARD
Passengers may pick up a Sunflower Lanyard from any member of our Terminal Services team.
Can’t find the terminal services counter or have questions? Please call our team at 250-787-0426 or email us at info@yxj.ca
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE SUNFLOWER PROGRAM
Learn more about the Sunflower Lanyard Program and hidden disabilities.
Please note that this program does not allow for special treatment or expedited security screening but is a reminder to airport staff to show extra compassion, allow time for additional assistance, and let those travelling with these hidden disabilities feel comfortable and confident.
If you require assistance during your flight, the airline will be in the best position to assist you, and you should continue to request special assistance services from your airline.
The sunflower lanyard is yours to keep after your trip. You may keep it and bring it on your next trip. There are over 130 Sunflower friendly-airports globally.
